HANOI, VIETNAM (AP): A man was killed and two others were seriously injured when a Vietnam War-era mortar shell they were sawing for scrap metal exploded in central Vietnam, state media said Saturday, December 22, 2007.
The men discovered six 105-millimeter mortars from the Vietnam War in Cu Pao village, in Dak Lak province. One of the mortars exploded when they tried to open it, the Tuoi Tre (Youth) Newspaper reported.
Bui Huu Tam, 28, was killed instantly. The explosion also seriously injured two others, who were still hospitalized, the paper said.
Dak Lak is 350 kilometers (219 miles) northeast of Ho Chi Minh City.
Unexploded ordnance from the Vietnam War has killed about 38,000 people since the conflict ended in 1975.
