Hmong refugees on hunger strike in Thailand

August 17, 2007

BANGKOK (AFP) – Some 150 Hmong refugees in Thailand, including 80 children, have begun a hunger strike to protest poor living conditions at a detention centre near the Thai-Laos border, an official and the UN said Friday.

They have been held at the detention centre in Nong Khai province since last December for illegally entering Thailand from neighboring Laos.

Some of the migrants [are] threatening to commit suicide.

“But they are being held under really deplorable conditions.”
