MADISON, Wis. (AP) – A Marine who went missing in Vietnam has been buried with full military honors nearly 40 years later.
Friends and family of Gunnery Sergeant Richard W. Fischer gathered Monday at a Madison cemetery to lay him to rest.
Fischer disappeared in Vietnam while conducting military operations in January 1968.
The graduate of Madison’s [WI] East High School was 20 years old at the time.
The military identified Fischer’s remains earlier this year after his relatives submitted DNA samples for testing.
Pastor Dale Chapin says the event gives closure to Fischer’s family after four decades of uncertainty.
He says it’s a day of healing and joy.
