US, China to discuss economy next month

WASHINGTON – Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and a group of Bush administration officials plan to travel to Beijing next month for the third round of high-level economic talks with China.

The Treasury Department announced Tuesday that the Strategic Economic Dialogue will take place Dec. 12-13 in Grand Epoch City, a conference center near Beijing.

In addition to Paulson, administration officials expected to participate include Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez, Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt, U.S. Trade Representative Susan Schwab, Acting Agriculture Secretary Chuck Conner and Stephen Johnson, head of the Environmental Protection Agency.

US commerce secretary begins Vietnam visit to boost trade

(AP) HANOI, Vietnam – U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez arrived in Vietnam on Sunday on a three-day visit to expand economic ties between the United States and its former foe, the U.S. Embassy said.

Gutierrez and a delegation of U.S. trade officials and business leaders landed late Sunday night in Hanoi, said Nguyen Xuan Toan, a customs official with the U.S. Embassy in Hanoi.

Gutierrez is expected to meet with Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and President Nguyen Minh Triet on Monday, accompanied by representatives from 23 U.S. businesses including Dow Chemical Co., Ford Motor Co. 3M Co., Alcoa Inc., and Northwest Airlines Corp.
