Vietnam To Help Philippines Solve Coconut Beetle Problem

MANILA, Aug 11 (PNA) – The Socialist Republic of Vietnam on Friday vowed to help the Philippines in the eradication of the invasive plant pest that threatens to wipe out the country’s US$760-million coconut industry, the Philippine News Agency (PNA) reported.

Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap, in an interview, said good relation between the two countries further bolstered with Vietnam’s willingness to help address the Philippines’ problem with the coconut hispine beetle (Brontispa longissima Gestro) which threatens to wipe out the coconut industry.

“Vietnam expressed willingness to help the country in eradicating Brontispa virus as the former was able to culture the natural predator of the coconut disease,” he said.
