BEIJING – The installation of a Chinese bishop well regarded by the Holy See marked the beginning of what could be a “new chapter, a new reality” in the Catholic church’s relationship with the government in Beijing, a Vatican official said Friday.

Joseph Li Shan was appointed to the influential post of bishop of China‘s capital at a ceremony at Beijing’s 400-year-old Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.
