Death Threat: What Do Many Teens Have in Common With Heath Ledger, Britney Spears?

February 7, 2008

There is a huge likelihood that a teenager you know shares these following things with Heath Ledger and Britney Spears: Vicodin, Oxycontin and Xanax and the belief that since doctors prescribed these they are OK to use.

But what few grasp is this: doctors are not saints.  Several told us that they prescribe drugs quickly so they can get to the next patient faster.

Add to this people who mix drugs, take more than is prescribed, mix drugs with alcohol, mix drugs without the primary care physician’s knowdge and “doctor shop.”

You end up with addiction, other illnesses and death.

Sadly, Heath Ledger’s Dad knows this too well.

“While no medications were taken in excess, we learned today the combination of doctor-prescribed drugs proved lethal for our boy,” he said.

Intervention is that course of action that stops an abuser or an addict dead in their tracks — before death knoks on their door.

If you know someone who needs care due to drug (including alcohol) addiction or abuse: take action.  Show your love by causing an intervention.

You’ll regret looking the other way for the rest of your life.

Spears’ dad to retain control until February 14

February 5, 2008

LOS ANGELES (AP) – A court commissioner on Monday extended the temporary conservatorship of Britney Spears to her father and an attorney until Feb. 14 and appointed a physician to evaluate her competence to make decisions.

The hearing came three days after her father, James Spears, and her attorney, Andrew Wallet, were granted temporary conservatorship after Superior Court Commissioner Reva Goetz ruled that Spears needed someone to take over her personal and financial affairs.

Goetz’s decision might not sit well with Spears, who remains in a hospital psychiatric ward undergoing a medical evaluation. Adam Streisand, who sought to enter the case as Spears’ lawyer, said in court that the pop star told him her dad shouldn’t be named the conservator of her and her estate.
*******

Another Report:
The decision came after lawyer Adam Streisand unsuccessfully sought to enter the case as Spears’ attorney, saying she told him by phone that her father, James Spears, should be removed from the case.

“She has expressed to me very strongly that her father not be the conservator,” Streisand said. “There has been an estrangement for quite some time. With him as conservator, that is causing her more agitation and more distress.”

Superior Court Commissioner Reva Goetz rejected Streisand’s request to represent the singer and extended her order granting James Spears temporary conservatorship until Feb. 14. He was given control on Friday.

She also appointed a physician to evaluate her competence to make decisions.

In addition, Goetz went a step further in distancing Britney Spears from her friend and sometime manager, Sam Lutfi.

The singer was ordered to have no contact with Lutfi, specifying she can’t reach him by phone, text message or any other means. Goetz also extended a restraining order against Lutfi.

Court spokesman Allan Parachini said the restraining order has not yet been served on Lutfi, but he declined to elaborate.

In a text message to The Associated Press, Lutfi said: “I have no problems with anyone writing anything negative against me. My image is not of concern, hers is.”

Lutfi did not immediately respond to further questions left in text and phone messages.

Streisand, who conservatively placed the singer’s estate assets at $40 million, said he believed he had been authorized to represent the singer.

Court-appointed attorney Samuel Ingham said he had interviewed Britney Spears on Sunday at UCLA Medical Center and determined that she didn’t understand the court proceedings, and that “she lacks the capacity to retain counsel.”

Streisand argued that she hadn’t been given any notice of Ingham’s plan to interview her, saying Ingham appeared at the hospital unannounced.

Vivian Thoreen, attorney for James Spears, said her client should continue to be conservator because “his daughter is in great distress.”

“He’s not here to take over her assets,” Thoreen said. “He’s here to get her medical help. He’s here to take over while she’s healing.”

Britney Spears was originally to be released Sunday after a 72-hour mental evaluation. But doctors and a ward medical officer cited California law to keep her for two weeks, said a person close to the pop star who requested anonymity.

The state law allows patients to be kept for medical treatment if they are found to be gravely disabled or a danger to themselves or others.

Streisand also said one of Spears’ entities is being audited by the IRS.

Earlier Monday, a child custody hearing was held but continued because of Spears’ condition.

Lawyers for Britney Spears, her ex-husband Kevin Federline and her conservators met behind closed doors. The hearing was to deal with efforts by Spears’ legal team to withdraw from the case, but the lawyers abandoned that effort last week.

Superior Court Commissioner Scott Gordon barred the singer from contact with her two small children after she refused last month to relinquish the children to representatives of Federline after a court-sanctioned visit.

On that occasion, she was also taken to a hospital for psychiatric observation but quickly released.

On Sunday a judge in Los Angeles extended Britney Spears‘ stay in a psychiatric ward two weeks under a section in state law that allows patients to be kept for medical treatment if they are found to be gravely disabled or a danger to themselves or others.

The extension was viewed as a safety measure that may permit Ms. Spears time to detoxify or “detox” under supervised conditions.  She is unable to self medicate in the UCLA Medical Center where she is receiving care.

Ms. Spears was to be released Sunday from the Medical Center‘s psychiatric ward after undergoing a 72-hour mental evaluation under California State Code 5150.

The Associated Press reported that Ms. Spears’ extension of detainment Sunday made it unlikely she would appear at a scheduled Monday morning hearing over custody of her children, 1-year-old Jayden James and 2-year-old Sean Preston.

***********

Ms. Spears, 26, lost custody of the boys to ex-husband Kevin Federline following an incident last month when she refused to return the children after a visit.

Ms. Spears was briefly hospitalized because of her bizarre behavior at that time. On Thursday, she was again hospitalized — apparently due to a family intervention.

On Friday, Court Commissioner Reva Goetz ruled that Spears needed someone else to take over her personal and financial affairs.  Her father James is now accountable to the court for her care and well being — removing Ms. Spears from her manager and mother.

Spears’ father, James, and her attorney, Andrew Wallet, were granted conservatorship, but a court hearing was scheduled Monday afternoon to review the matter.

A UCLA Medical Center spokesman did not immediately return a phone message Sunday seeking comment. Calls to Wallet and attorney Sorrell Trope also were not returned.

Spears’ erratic behavior since she filed for divorce in November 2006 has included appearing in short skirts without underwear, shaving her head, abandoning a car in traffic when it had a flat tire, and recently, holding her dog and sobbing on a sidewalk.

A friend asked me this morning why I was writing about Britney Spears and “pop culture.”  I told him this story was no longer about “pop culture” but is now a familiar saga of drug and alcohol abuse, intervention, mental and medical care and recovery (hopefully).

Ms. Spears is just another media “star” who overused drugs and alcohol.  Now perhaps she can obtain the treatment she needs and return to the spotlight with a new lease on life.

Britney Spears: Decline Repeatedly Noted Before

February 2, 2008

By John E. Carey

A suburban housewife said to me yesterday, “What happened to Britney Spears, all of a sudden.”

The answer is: Nothing.

Like most drug and alcohol abusers, the decline for Britney was prolonged, obvious and intense.

The real question that faces all of us when we see such a decline in our own midst is: what can we do to help?

The answer is: Intervention.

Intervention is the loving act of saying enough is enough.

Even in our society that promotes freedom above practically all else there are times to say “Stop.”

“Enough already” may be the phrase that allows life to continue or, for some, return.

Britney Spears was taken from her home by ambulance early Thursday and escorted to the hospital by more than a dozen police officers. A Los Angeles police officer, who requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on the matter, said the 26-year-old pop star was being taken to ‘get help.’

If you see wild and crazy abuse right before your nose, you are doing God’s work to help find solutions.

And intervention does not, to me, mean one visit to one doctor.  Taking a serious drug and alcohol abuser for a doctor’s “visit” is like taking your car with a steering problem to “Jiffy Lube.”  At both places you’ll leave in an hour with a fluid change.

Meaning the doctor will send the abuser/alcoholic to the pharmacy: which is often the wrong course of action.

And you won’t get your steering fixed.

A friend of mine who runs a treatment center called “The Manor House,” one Bill Alexander, said to me once, “Doctors are killing alcohol and drug users every day.”

One of the “treatment” drugs is often Xanax.

Xanax can kill an alcoholic.

Steve Hayes, the Director of Novus Detox said, “We see it every day.”

Steve had been speaking to a man with a problem similar to Brit’s.

“His life is falling apart,” Steve told me. “This is a guy that relied on medical doctors and trusted the drug companies.”

Intervention takes some work.  But it won’t take you as long as the serious drug or alcohol user has invested in ruination.

The article below appeared in 2006.  It is a reminder that everyone knew Britney was in trouble — even then and probably before.

Britney Spears: Pill-Popping Dope Fiend?

Semi-reliable news source In Touch Weekly is reporting that Britney Spears may have made the leap from a mere amateur crotch shot queen and raging booze hound to unabashed, pill-popping dope fiend.

Brit was recently spotted by fellow club-goers in a restaurant bathroom with a purse full of pills, including an anti-depressant, Paxil, and an anti-anxiety drug, Xanax. Britney is said to have been popping Xanax like it’s hot – right in front of everyone.

“It looked like a freaking pharmacy in there – I have never seen so many pills,” says a witness. “There was a bottle of Paxil, an antidepressant, and a bottle of Xanax, which treats anxiety, that she took out and put on the counter.”

You’re probably not supposed to mix those drugs, and you’re definitely not supposed to drink while using them.

While both drugs mentioned above are legal if you have a prescription, somehow T.H. Gossip doubts Brit got them from her primary care physician. It’s far more likely Paris Hilton’s pool guy smuggled them up from Tijuana.

This is only the latest event in the ever-evolving Britney Spears train wreck.

Court: Spears’ dad has temporary control

February 2, 2008

LOS ANGELES – The father of Britney Spears was named her temporary conservator Friday, putting him in control of her welfare a day after she was whisked to a hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.

While James Spears was named conservator of the troubled pop star herself, he and an attorney, Andrew Wallete, were name conservators of her estate. The singer’s mother, Lynne Spears, also showed up for the unannounced hearing in Superior Court.

The court also issued a restraining order against Britney Spears’ sometimes manager and friend, Sam Lutfi, and gave permission to change the locks on her estate and remove anyone who is there.

A court creates conservatorships when a person cannot care for themselves or handle their affairs. Commissioner Reva Goetz said Spears would be under conservatorship until Feb. 4, at which time another hearing will be held.

“It is in the best interests of the conservatee to have conservatorship over her person,” Goetz told a packed courtroom.

The conservator will have the power to “restrict visitors,” have around-the-clock security for Spears, and have access to all medical records, Goetz said.

Goetz said conservatorship over the estate was “necessary and appropriate.” She gave approval for the conservator to “take all actions to secure all liquid assets including credit cards.”

LOS ANGELES – Britney Spears was derailed yet again in her struggle to get her life back on track, losing custody of her two sons to ex-husband Kevin Federline. A court commissioner Friday gave sole physical and legal custody of the former couple’s two little boys to Federline and suspended the troubled pop star’s visitation rights.

Spears was hauled away from her home to a hospital by paramedics a day before, after police had to intervene when she refused to return the children to Federline after a court-monitored visit.

This is meant to reflect deep concern for the shallowness of some of America’s culture and to indicate great concern for our youth.

We don’t have enage daughters so we try not to pass judgment on those youngsters and their offspring — or their parents. But sometimes, it is darned near impossible to resist commenting upon the morals and antics of our young people in our extremely permissive society.

Last night, Britney Spears was removed from her home by police and emergency workers following a three hour stand-off with the father of her children, Kevin Federline.

Reporters said she was handcuffed and in an ambulance when she arrived at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in L.A.  The incident concerned cutody for the couple’s sons, 2-year-old Sean Preston and 1-year-old Jayden James.

Police and hospital officials said Miss Spears was under the influence of something which they did not disclose or discuss.

Five days before Christmas, the sixteen year old star of “Zoey 101” Miss Jamie Lynn Spears, Britney’s sister, announced that she was pregnant with the child of her boyfriend one Casey Aldridge.

Jamie Lynn Spears

Jamie who needs a condom and a lecture.

“I was in complete and total shock and so was he,” gushed the younger Miss Spears.

Well: here’s a newsflash. Every sixteen year old knows if you have unprotected sex there are consequences.

The TV show the 16 year old stars in has become the most popular TV show for girls between the ages of and 8 and 12.

The mother of the Spears youngsters is Lynn, already a grandmother to Britney’s young sons.

Said Lynn: “I didn’t believe it because Jamie Lynn’s always been so conscientious. She’s never late for her curfew. I was in shock. I mean, this is my 16-year-old baby.”

Grow up grandma.

Jamie Lynne’s future on TV could be in danger, at least for a short time, and her mom’s book on parenting has been “shelved” by her publisher.

The parenting book was to have been published by a Christian book company.

Lindsay Lohan is another “star” who has questionable appeal as a “role model.”  She is only a photogropher’s model and her looks won’t last especially if she continues to abuse drugs and alcohol.

The actress has been in and out of rehab after two arrests last year on drunken driving and cocaine charges.  Early in 2008 she posed nude in a Marilyn Monroe look-alike spread.

*******************

Today another teen heart throb entered the “News About My Sex Life” arena.  Nineteen year old actress Vanessa Hudgens discussed what she called the “traumatic” scandal concerning her nude photos appearing all over the internet.

(
Frazer Harrison, Getty Images)

Another news flash: in our digital age one had better not pose for porn lest it become for sale on the open and world-wide media circus. Only a few Chinese who are subject to tight state internet and other media restrictions will miss out on seeing Miss Hudgens “in the buff.”

Maybe all this titillation from teen girls is just to gain more media attention?  One wonders….

I remember when the worst thing a sixteen year old could do would earn him or her some time after school or a delayed shot at getting a drivers license.  Even at 19 my friends thought drinking three beers was a dangerous sport of epic proportions.

One wonders what the sons and daughters of drama queens Hudgens and Spears can possibly do to shock their parents in 16 years from now…..

I guess it is hard to find a virgin in today’s America above the age of, say, 10?  And parenting has become, well, as permissive, “tolerant,” accepting and understanding as it can get.  Bill Clinton must be delighted.

Is this what we really want?

Nearly four months after a nude photo of High School Musical star Vanessa Hudgens hit the Internet, the 19-year-old actress has issued fans another mea culpa … well, sort of.

In the latest issue of Seventeen magazine, Hudgens said she’s not sorry for taking the risqué picture, which she repeatedly called “private,” but sorry instead for getting caught.

“It’s very unfortunate, because with the Internet these days, you don’t have a personal life,” she told the magazine for its February cover story. “Nothing is private: Everyone knows everything, and they can find out everything about you. You’re not as safe as you think you are, and you have to be aware of the people you’re around. It was something that was meant to be private, and even though it isn’t anymore, I’d still like to keep it as private as I can.”

Hudgens’ remarks to the magazine somewhat contradict an earlier statement issued days after the leak by her management, in which she apologized to her fans and said she felt embarrassment and “regret [at] having ever taken these photos.”

Although she recently admitted to Seventeen that the incident was “traumatic” and made her “extremely upset,” she said she’s “much better now” thanks in large part to her “family, friends, and fans, who supported me all along the way.”

Specifically, she singled out her mother to the magazine as particularly supportive.

“I was just open with her, and she was just so cute. She was like, ‘Well, everyone can be naked if they want to,’ ” Hudgens told Seventeen. “My parents are very supportive of me. And they know I’m a teenager, and yes, kids do stupid things sometimes.”

According to the article, Hudgens found out about the photo leak while out of the country. She claims the distance made her better equipped to deal with the resulting fallout.

“I found out from my manager,” she revealed. “We heard some story was going to break in the tabloids, and I was like, ‘What?!?’ A few days later, the picture came out while I was on vacation in Australia. Thank God I wasn’t home. It would have sucked if I was at home. So I got to be away from L.A. for about a millisecond. But when I came back, it got kind of crazy.

“I hope all my fans can learn from my mistake and make smart decisions,” she concluded.
