Vietnam Veterans Day, Oklahoma

March 20, 2008
Lawton, OK — They served the United States.  They defended the country.  And, they were treated rather shabbily says Lawton Mayor John Purcell of post-war treatment of Vietnam Veterans.
But, “Vietnam Veterans’ Day” in Oklahoma sets out to honor all Vietnam Veterans with the recognition they may have never received.Purcell says that since the Vietnam War, the US has learned the value of our veterans.  “That’s why it’s so important, and why they’re out at fort sill at every deployment and redeployment ceremony,” he says.  To honor these soldiers who’ve served this country in Iraq, and Afghanistan, and throughout the world.”

Vietnam Vets of America, Chapter 751 of Lawton, celebrated on Thursday with an annual cookout.  The chapter is the largest in the state, and they’re working with veterans of the Iraq War to make sure they get the benefits they deserve.  Benefits they say they’re still fighting for.
