China’s First At-Sea Hospital

the world’s first 10,000-ton hospital carrier – Ship 866, designed and built independently by China was formally delivered to the East Sea Fleet of the Chinese Navy. It marks an important breakthrough in maritime emergency equipment manufacturing for China, making the country one of the few in the world that has medical care and emergency rescue capabilities on the high seas while also raising the capability of the Chinese Navy to accomplish diversified military missions.

Ship 866 is the world’s only large professional hospital carrier “tailor made” for maritime medical care and emergency rescue. Hospital carriers of other countries, including the US, the UK and Canada, have all been either refitted or are multi-functional ships.

This large hospital carrier provides maritime early diagnosis and treatment including some of the specialist treatments needed for the injured and ill during battles. In peace time it can carry out maritime medical rescues and training missions, and provide medical services to vessel formations and troops stationed on distant islands. The carrier features high-tech, comprehensive functions and facilities equivalent to level-three class A hospitals.
