John McCain vows to fight to the finish in Defiance, Ohio

The looming prospect of defeat in the US presidential election is bringing out the best in Senator John McCain, who on Thursday chose a town named Defiance to make a spirited vow to fight to the end of the campaign.

Starting a two-day bus tour of Ohio, which the Republicans must win to have a chance of taking the White House in next week’s election, Mr McCain was given a rousing reception by a crowd of several thousand standing in freezing temperatures outside the town’s high school.

“We need to win Ohio on November 4 and with your help we are going to!” roared Mr McCain. “But I need your energy, your enthusiasm. We need you working for the next five days, we need to fight, we need to fight for this country.”

Trailing by an average of six to seven points in the polls, the 72-year-old Arizona senator noted that the last president to win the White House without winning Ohio was John F Kennedy in 1960.

Like Hillary Clinton in the primaries, the Vietnam war veteran is showing his best form under the greatest pressure. And like the former First Lady, whose supporters McCain has had limited success wooing, he came out to the theme tune from Rocky, the ultimate underdog’s song.

Mr McCain lauded the achievements of Joe Wurzelbacher, aka Joe the Plumber, for succeeding in revealing to the nation that Senator Barack Obama believed in “spreading the wealth around”. In an awkward moment, he asked Joe to stand up and enjoy the audience’s appreciation, only to realise that he wasn’t there.

“Well, you are all Joe the Plumber!” Mr McCain told the laughing crowd, recovering quickly. “Wherever you are, Joe, let’s give him a round of applause for what he has done for America.”
