Vietnam: Ministries Agree On Solution Of Tainted Milk Scandal

HANOI, Oct 24 (Bernama) — Vietnamese businesses that have imported melamine-contaminated milk from China will re-export the products with the support of the General Customs Department, the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Foreign Ministry, Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reported. This solution was agreed upon by the Ministries of Health, Agriculture and Rural Development, Industry and Trade, Natural Resources and Environment, Public Security, Foreign Affairs, and Science and Technology at an inter-ministerial steering committee addressing food hygiene and safety which took place on Thursday.

These businesses are also being encouraged to negotiate with their Chinese partners over re-exporting any milk products found to contain melamine.

Any tainted milk products of unclear origin or poor quality will be destroyed by Nov. 5 at the latest, under guidelines issued by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.

The ministries agreed not to issue safe melamine limits for food in general and milk in particular but to accept the FAO and WHO’s recommendations that all tainted milk products be confiscated in order to ensure the health of consumers, particularly children.

The ministries will handle 775.5 tonnes of tainted milk and milk products, including 411 tonnes of imported milk, Deputy Minister of Health Cao Minh Quang said.
